The Julian Morris Travel Award honours the contributions of
Professor Julian Morris FREng, formerly of Newcastle University, to process
analysis and process control. CPACT introduced this award to allow a Doctorate
student to attend a conference and/or spend some time working with another
research group in a country different to where they are studying.
The winner of the 2024 Award is Chi Ki Leung
from the University of Cambridge.
Chi Ki
said “I am honoured to receive the Julian Morris International Travel Award,
which will enable me to attend two renowned conferences: the 5th European
Conference on Pharmaceutics in Porto, Portugal, and the 50th International
Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz) in Helsinki,
Finland.
I am
excited to present three key projects from my PhD research at the 5th European
Conference on Pharmaceutics. The projects focus on advancing at-line terahertz
process analytical technology (PAT) for real-time release testing (RTRT) of
critical material, process, and quality parameters in oral solid dosage
manufacturing. I will demonstrate the application of terahertz PAT to monitor
the solid-state properties of drug substances, investigate the impact of
particle attributes on disintegration, and predict point-of-care tablet
disintegration times. I look forward to engaging with the European
pharmaceutical community, gathering valuable feedback, and refining my research
to better address industry challenges.
At
the 50th IRMMW-THz Conference, which will be held in late August 2025, I plan
to present the latest findings from my ongoing projects. I will showcase the
continued development of terahertz technology as a robust at-line PAT. The conference
will provide an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with leading experts,
and leverage the latest advancements in terahertz technology to enhance my
research further.
I am
immensely grateful to CPACT for their generous support, which has made these
opportunities possible. The award will contribute significantly towards conference
fees, travel, and accommodation expenses. Winning this award marks an important
milestone in my PhD journey, and I am thrilled to share my work on these
prestigious international platforms. Thank you very much!”
We hope that Chi Ki
enjoys the conferences next year.
