Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), a global leader in
project-based learning, is a distinctive, top-tier technological university
founded in 1865. Based on its “very high research spending and doctorate
production,” WPI has been designated as an R1 research institution and
joined the ranks of the nation’s top-tier research institutions in a new
classification of the American Council on Education (ACE) and the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT), which recognizes
WPI’s commitment to excellence and high-impact innovation. In 2025, the WPI
research enterprise comprises $62 million in annual research expenditures,
supports a diverse range of research institutes and centers and
advances interdisciplinary research in the key focus areas of Life Sciences
and Biotechnolgy, Advanced Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing, AI, Data
Science, and Robotics. WPI is proud to be the first academic member of CPACT
