CPACT Webinar on
Deep UV Technologies: From Exploring Mars to
Redefining Pharma Technologies

Sensitive
chemical measurements are essential to pharmaceutical development and
manufacturing, particularly when low analyte concentrations and complex sample
matrices challenge conventional approaches. Deep ultraviolet (UV) Raman and
fluorescence spectroscopy offer complementary ways to address these challenges
by probing molecular vibrations and electronic transitions.
This
webinar will introduce the rationale for deep UV spectroscopy in Mars
exploration, where detecting trace organic compounds demands sensitive
measurements and robust instrumentation. The focus will then turn to the
underlying photophysics: how excitation wavelength influences Raman scattering
efficiency, how resonance selectively enhances signals from relevant molecular
groups, and how deep UV excitation can separate Raman signals from fluorescence
emission while also enabling sensitive fluorescence measurements.
Data from
three pharmaceutical applications will connect these principles to analytical
performance. UltraPAT examples will examine deep UV fluorescence for low-dose
blend monitoring, including calibration and instrument repeatability. VERIFI
results will illustrate fluorescence detection of pharmaceutical residues on
surfaces and swabs for rapid cleaning verification. RPL200 data will
demonstrate deep UV resonance Raman quantitation of mRNA in intact lipid
nanoparticles, highlighting selective detection of nucleic acid signatures
within complex formulations.
Throughout,
the emphasis will be on why the measurements work and what determines their
usefulness, including molecular response, sample matrix, sampling geometry and
calibration. Participants will gain a practical basis for evaluating where deep
UV spectroscopy can contribute to process analytical technology (PAT),
pharmaceutical development and manufacturing.
